Keep your Kin safe: a must read for new users

This article has tips for new users about keeping your Kin secure and avoiding scams.

The Kin community is a big place with dozens of apps and millions of users. Here’s some good tips to remember when being online:

Never share your secret recovery phrase or private key with anyone

DO NOT share your secret recovery phrase or private key with anyone! If someone has access to this information, they will have access to your wallet. If you are obtaining technical support, these services do not need your secret recovery phrase or private key so don’t share it. If you are asked to connect your wallet to an external site or app, be aware it may be able to send transactions from your wallet once connected.

Protect yourself from online scams

Scams target people of all backgrounds and ages. There's no one group of people who are more likely to become a victim of a scam.

Scams succeed because they look like the real thing and catch you off guard when you’re not expecting it. Scammers are getting smarter and taking advantage of new technology and this includes crypto to create believable stories that will convince you to give them your money or personal details.

  1. Know who you’re dealing with
    1. If you've only ever met someone online or are unsure of the legitimacy of a business, take some time to do a bit more research. If you receive a message or e-mail from an app or business that seems unusual, contact the app or business directly to check it was really them that sent it.

  1. Keep your mobile devices and computers secure Always use password protection, don’t share access with others (including remotely), update security software and avoid using public computers of WIFI hotspots to access sensitive information.

Report scammers

If you come across a scam, you should report it to the platform or app where it occurred and inform them of the circumstances surrounding the scam.
